Top Management And Leadership Books To Read In 2012
Guest Post by Penny Munroe - It’s becoming more and more difficult to find the time to complete a great book. However, if you were told that reading management and leadership books could actually create more time for you and make your professional life more successful, would you swap your television time for reading?
Great leadership and management is a learnt skill, requiring a holistic knowledge of people, business operations and management styles. As a business owner or entrepreneur, it is very easy to receive bad advice as unfortunately, the worst leaders are also the ones with the biggest egos and opinions.
Therefore, taking the time to read the words of wizened professionals and industry leaders may be the best advice you ever received. Below is a list of three excellent and recent management and leadership books by some of the most knowledgeable experts in the business.
Good to Great by Jim Collins
At the top of our list is Jim Collins’s Good to Great, which has received an incredible four and a half stars by Amazon.com users. It is not the first of his books to reach the leadership books bestsellers list; fans will remember his hugely successful Built to Last.
However, Good to Great has been described as the prequel, so if you haven’t yet read his first book don’t despair, there will be more time for it later. The leadership book takes on the form of an insightful examination of eleven public companies that had all exhibited average stock market returns over fifteen years, and then over a further fifteen years experienced incredibly higher cumulative returns.
The transition companies of all the companies were closely examined, returning some interesting findings and conclusions on what made them transcend from good to great. Collins and his team map out three stages of transition, which use clear examples and supporting examples to help you and your company rise above the competition.
Anything You Want by Derek Sivers
Derek Sivers is an inspirational figure in the business world. Not only did he start a business CD Baby completely from scratch, but donated it to charity afterwards. CD Baby is a music site were independent artists can sell their music. In his book Anything You Want Derek takes his readers through the lessons he learnt in developing his business.
The main message of his leadership book is that he was motivated by people as opposed to money, making this an engaging and people orientated read. It’s a great book on leadership style.
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell
This top leadership book categories leadership into different stages, making the development of the skill easier and more attainable to the everyday reader. It’s a leadership skills book that can turn a novice into a great reader, if they key leadership ideas in the book are followed.

An interesting view on this, I’m not sure I agree but I understand what you are saying. At least you are not afraid to say what you feel, I hate it when people say what is expected rather than what they really think!
