Guest Post byEugene Calvini– Communication skills aren’t necessarily mastered until you understand the different styles you can use to get different results. There are two sides of a coin that are equally important if you’re to master good communication skills.
Breaking down these two aspects aren’t difficult and it’s encouraged that you try both out for maximum results however you’ll have to use your own intuition as to which is appropriate to any given situation.
Direct Communication Skills
Direct communication skills are primarily verbal in that they require you to take the lead in a conversation. In direct communication it’s important to keep your speech clearly defined and without room for incorrect interpretation. With direct communication you should also take active participation in meeting; this situation is one of the few times that the circumstances are clearly defined to use direct communication.
One of the key areas skills in communication can benefit is when you want to share a perception you are wholly sure about; this is an opportune moment to use direct communication. Using definitive terms such as ‘must’ and ‘should’ are circumstances in which direct communication is best utilized. Finally encouragement is a good time to be clear and use direct communication since the person you’re addressing is almost certainly going to appreciate your confidence.
Indirect Communication Skills
Indirect conversation is a bit more subtle, but just as important as part of your skills for effective communication. A good time to use indirect communication is when you’re trying to gather information from someone else without actively offering information yourself; it’s also effective for management when trying to remain politically correct. Communication skills and techniques that experts tout usually involved the gathering of information through strategic questions; this is an example of indirect communication.
Indirect communication can be your own silence on a matter during a meeting as this is also considered a response even if you remain silent. A less definite approach such as offering a suggestion or consideration would also fall into the indirect communication domain where the skill becomes how suggestive you can adequately be. Getting more people to give their opinions and insight on a topic is something that you’ve brought about with your speech through communication skills; any improvements brought about by your part will be a result of indirect communication.
As you can see these two aspects are most definitely polar opposites, but I’m sure you’ve already recalled instances in your life that could’ve benefited from the one approach or the other. Communication skills will always include knowing what the best approach is for either situation. You’ve got the groundwork, you only need to gather the experience and you’ll be better off as far as communication skills are concerned in no time.
